Qatar Airways, first Gulf airline company operating flights to Bucharest
A Qatar Airways flight landed in Bucharest for the first time on Monday and the company is going to operate flights on the Doha-Bucharest route four times a week. Qatar Airways is the first five-star airline company coming to Bucharest and the first airline of the Middle East operating direct flights to Romania.
'We have wanted to come to Bucharest for many years, but we did not have the necessary number of aircraft for this. Romania is a stable country, with good economic prospects and a great tourist potential, so it is extremely interesting for us. With this route, the Romanian passengers are able to resort to the shortest flight to the Middle East, instead of a flight with a stopover in Amsterdam or Paris. In addition, they can fly with one of the seven five-star companies in the world,' said Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker, who came to Bucharest on the inaugurating flight.
He mentioned that for the beginning Qatar Airways would fly an Airbus A320 aircraft to Bucharest, but in approximately 4-6 months they would fly an Airbus A321.
'We now operate flights on the route Doha-Bucharest-Budapest, but once the Airbus A321 aircraft is introduced, we shall have Doha-Bucharest roundtrip flights. When we reach a certain number of passengers, we could bring a Boeing 737 Dreamliner to Bucharest,' the company's CEO said.
The company has 96 international destinations on all the six continents and intends to reach 130 destinations in the next few years, as it is currently expanding in Europe.
'The fact that a company such as Qatar Airways came to Romania means that there is potential and other large Middle Eastern companies [Emirates, Golf Air] are likely to soon operate in Bucharest, especially since we have been contacted in this respect,' said Transports Ministry's Civil Aviation director Catalin Radu.
Transports Minister Anca Boagiu said that Qatar Airways' coming to Bucharest proved that the Henri Coanda International Airport could become a regional hub.
'It is an extremely important step in the plan of Henri Coanda Airport's turning into a regional airport and this year we shall begin work on the underground connecting the capital to the airport,' the Transports Minister also said.
Regional Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, who attended Qatar Airways' inaugurating flight to Bucharest, said that Romania had tourist potential and it could be a destination for tourists of the Gulf area and that 'Qatar Airways practically opens this relation between Romania and Qatar.'
